Saved From Scrap! Repair BROKEN Double-Acting Telescopic Cylinder!
We’re going to tackle this complex part and show you the step-by-step repair of a broken double acting telescopic cylinder for a Cat 657 Scraper Ejector cylinder. Join us as we take you through the entire process, from removing the damaged end to machining a brand new inner tube. We'll start by cutting and removing the broken section. Next, we'll head over to the lathe to machine out the weld joint and use some heat to help us separate the rod eye and inner tube from the outer cylinder. The old inner tube won't be salvageable, so we'll machine a brand new one to fit perfectly. But that's not all! We'll also show you how to press the new tube into shape and align everything before welding it securely to the rod eye. Once the new inner tube is in place, we'll prepare the outer tube for welding and carefully reassemble the entire part. Finally, we'll machine down the welds for a clean finish, getting this component ready for re-chroming. Double-acting hydraulic cylinders do have a complexity that can lead to a few issues, even a minor leak can compromise the precision of how it works, so join us we bring this broken one back to life!
In this video we are using:

We've got a local cylinder shop that has a cool set up for pulling cylinders apart. They have a fairly heavy I-beam that they have welded substantial end plates on. Its sealed up with drains on the ends. It has holes on the sides to put pins across it. So they pin a damaged cyl on one end and they have a active live cyl pinned on the the other end. They couple the cylinders together and pull the one apart. All the oil is caught in the trough. I never seen it done but i imagine they could push it back together in it as well. It's a cool piece of shop built tooling.

Bloody good mate.I have to hand it to you, you can make the most mundane project look not only practical but interesting and informative at the same time. Your explanations and commentary show insight as well as imagination and creativity. I certainly hope all of your customers understand the value of your service and pay an appropriate amount for what ever you do for them. I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention that KAREN does a great job with the video, and I love the dog and the birds. I do have a question, and a comment ,how often does the dog get metal chips in his paws, and I wouldn’t want to be a target of his mouth.

It's a shame you can't get our semi parts in Australia from USA. The brake parts are actually industry standard so they can be made affordable. Idea being no one should save money and not replace/have working brakes on a semi for safety reasons. One good thing that's come from regulations

I know you like to do stuff yourself - and not pay for it - but if I needed a deep hole drilled to 36 bananas, or so, I would look for a rifle-barrel manufacturer. There is at least one in Queensland. It won't solve the "I need a step ladder" for the knee mill problem, but they probably can drill the hole you need... Actually they can probably drill it to ridiculous accuracy, ream it and rifle it, but you don't need all of that
